Why Take Part?
The participation in the Jessup Moot Court offers students the opportunity
- to practise skills that tend to be neglected in regular German university education (in particular the full concentration on a complex case in intensive teamwork);
- to work in a team;
- to train rhetorical and English language skills;
- to experience an in-depth introduction to substantive and procedural international law;
- to gain basic knowledge for international law research and the drafting of international law pleadings; and
- to compete against teams from all over the world in Washington, D.C. (if the team advances to the international rounds);.
Participation in the Jessup Moot Court counts as additional training with extension of the possibility of exemption (pursuant to § 37 (3) lit. b) JAPO 2003). In addition, a basic seminar (§§ 18 f. PrStO LMU) or a specialised language certificate can be credited. Alternatively, crediting as an internship within the meaning of § 25 JAPO is also possible.
Participation in the Munich team of the Jessup Moot Court is generally open to all law students from the third to the final semester at LMU. In addition, according to the Jessup Rules, other LMU students, e.g. political science students, can also take part in the Moot Court.
Guest students at LMU (LL.M. or Erasmus) may be eligible to participate. The same applies to regular LMU students who are currently studying abroad.
If you have any questions about eligibility, please email jessup-moot@jura.uni-muenchen.de.
Applicants for the Munich team should in any case have a solid command of English and should have an interest in public international law issues. However, prior knowledge of international law is not required and is not the rule when applying. Participation is therefore not only open to students specialising on Public International Law and European Law (so-called Schwerpunktbereich 9 at LMU).
The application must include
- a convincing letter of motivation (max. 2 pages in English!);
- the applicant's curriculum vitae (in English!);
- the appicant's grade overview of previous university achievements;
- the applicant's high school diploma; and
- other certificates/certificates/confirmations considered relevant for the application (language certificates, seminars, job references, etc.).
Please submit your documents as one (merged!) PDF document by e-mail to jessup-moot@jura.uni-muenchen.de.
It is no longer possible to apply for the 2024/25 team.
Four participants will be selected for the Munich team. After the application deadline, suitable applicants will be invited to personal selection interviews. The team is expected to be finalised by the beginning of August at the latest.
